"Prices will never decrease, but they may increase." That line sits halfway down The Morton Arboretum's ticket page for Illumination: Tree Lights. It governs the whole winter at the arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53 in Lisle. The 14th season runs Saturday, November 14, 2026, through Saturday, January 2, 2027. Public tickets go on sale Thursday, October 15, at 9 a.m. That is a full month before the first bulb is lit, and it is the week the arboretum's own scientists expected the maples to peak.
The calendar for the lights is mostly settled in October, during fall color season. Families who treat the arboretum as a second backyard are effectively planning December now.
Adult tickets start at $22 for nonmembers and $17.60 for members, who get 20% off. "Start at" matters here. The arboretum prices each night by day and time. Busier dates with higher expected attendance carry higher prices, and quieter dates cost less. The rule on the page is clear:
The amount you save varies, but the prices listed for each date will always be the lowest option at that time, for that particular date. Prices will never decrease, but they may increase. Buying ahead is always your best option!
A price that only rises means the $22 tickets are a limited supply, and the people who show up on October 15 get first pick. Members have been buying since their presale opened October 1 at 9 a.m. By the time public sales open, the arboretum's most loyal visitors have already had two weeks with the calendar.
There is a flexible option. Illumination AnyDay tickets are single-use tickets good for one adult or one child age 4 and up, at any entry time on any public night. They also go on sale October 15. They suit a household that knows it will go but can't pin down a December weeknight yet.
The trail is still the familiar one-mile, ADA-compliant paved loop. The arboretum calls this season "a reinvented holiday lights experience" and lists four new installations:
The bigger change is indoors. The Pine Whistle Railroad is a new walk-through model-train exhibit in the Firefly Pavilion, with nearly 1,000 feet of track. Some of it is raised, so trains run both overhead and at eye level through miniature scenes. It needs its own ticket: $9 for the public and $7 for members, with children 3 and under free. Pine Whistle tickets also go on sale to everyone October 15. If you've already booked Illumination, you can add the train by calling the ticket line at 630-725-2066, open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This year's signature drink is the Ultimate Blizzard Hot Cocoa. It comes with whipped cream, a large house-made cocoa marshmallow, a mini snowflake cookie and iridescent "snow dust," served in a limited-edition mug. You can prepurchase it at checkout while supplies last.
Plan-ahead pricing affects every night. A handful of dated events are scarce for a simpler reason, because each one happens only once or a few times. These are the ones to put on the calendar before October 15:
| Event | Date | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| IllumiBrew | Friday, Nov. 13, 5:30 to 10 p.m. | First look at the new trail with local beer, 21 and over; $95 public, $85 members; designated-driver tickets $50/$45 |
| Pine Whistle Railroad opening | Friday, Nov. 13 | Debuts the same night as IllumiBrew |
| Sensory Night | Tuesday, Nov. 17 | Static lights, low-volume music, limited capacity |
| Dog Admission Nights | Dec. 2, 9, 16 and Jan. 1 | $10 per dog, plus a human ticket |
| IllumiDome rentals | Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 27 to Jan. 2, plus New Year's Eve and New Year's Day | Private 13-foot domes for up to 8 guests; four-course dining add-on $60 per guest |
| Premium Parking | Most weekends and holidays | $18 per vehicle in the Administration Parking Lot; "availability is extremely limited" |
The IllumiDome rules stack on top of each other. Rental fees don't include admission, and the arboretum asks for proof of an Illumination ticket for the same date and time at booking. So a dome depends on a ticket, and the ticket price for that night only goes up. From November 27 through December 20, domes are available only from 5 to 7 p.m. The later 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. slot opens starting December 21. The Dining Dome is limited to one reservation per evening.
Through the Museums for All program, a limited number of reduced-rate tickets are available on select dates for guests with an EBT, P-EBT, LINK or WIC card. They are $10 for adults and $5 for children, and they also go on sale October 15.
The arboretum doesn't go quiet while the lights go up, and the overlap is what makes this a good week to plan. In September, Arboretum tree experts told Positively Naperville they expected maples to show their brightest color around mid-October and oaks in late October, though weather could shift the timing. The arboretum updates a Fall Color Report weekly and runs narrated Acorn Express tram tours during the season.
The rest of the Fall Color Festival calendar runs right up to the eve of Illumination season:
Fall concessions run Fridays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In the Visitor Center, the Ginkgo Café is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The Ginkgo Restaurant is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the winter visitor information on the Pine Whistle page. A walk under peak maples followed by lunch at the Ginkgo is a relaxed way to spend a mid-October weekday morning. It also gives you the afternoon to pull up the ticket calendar, while the quiet weeknights are still at their lowest price.
The Pine Whistle Railroad stays open for daytime visits after Illumination closes January 2, but the arboretum's two pages give different end dates. The Illumination page says February 13; the exhibit's own page says February 15, 2027. Plan on mid-February and check before a late visit. Members can buy daytime Pine Whistle tickets separately from Illumination. That makes the train a good post-holiday outing on a gray January Saturday, after the crowds have moved on.
Vivid Creatures, on view since May 17, 2025, runs through spring 2027. Next up is Tree Dimensions, five interactive sculptures scheduled to open May 22, 2027. For now, parking for everyday visits stays free, and buying general admission online saves $2 per ticket.
